We had, on short notice, a quick visit from WRDV legend Rich Reinhart last Saturday. It was wonderful to see.. and hear.. him.. he sounds great and looks fantastic.

A couple of announcements about the show... we will have long time collector and student of the music Carl Tancredi as a guest collector on January 28. He brings a unique blend of rare rhythm and blues to the show. And we tentatively have Paul Ressler, another very deep collector and owner of one of the finest collection of photographs of Rhythm And Blues artists, scheduled for February.

We of course note with sadness the passing of Lou Rawls. This Saturday, in addition to our January features on The Chantels, Otis Williams, and Little Richard, we'll do a tribute to Lou.

I've been really bad at keeping current on the posts... I apologize for that. No compelling reason for being so tardy. Okay enough breast-beating. Today we're going to do an all-Christmas show (despite my original plan to confine the all-Christmas syndrome to Christmas eve, there's so much good and unusual Christmas music to get on).

The playlist for this past Saturday's Halloween show mysteriously disappeared. Perhaps it will turn up somewhere or, if we're all lucky, it has disintegrated into thin air, or perhaps another dimension.

Below are photos taken at the Deep River Quartet's visit to WRDV on October 22, 2005. Our transmitter was down that day, and the concert only went out via the internet. My local recording system for the day broke down... but fortunately Lowell Thiel did get some of it. And late breaking news.. Karen Efron did tape the whole show and is sending me a copy. Assuming it arrives in good shape, I will be loading it onto disk and "re" broadcasting much of the show sometime in the next couple of weeks.

Although there's little for me to add to what all has been said and felt, I have to pay a respect to the terribly beseiged city and people of New Orleans. We often play and listen to the city's music, laugh about the "bon temps roulez" image that it fosters, and remark about its musical heritage, but the terrible state of its large underclass has been driven home this week as the tragedy among all the other tragedies we've seen. I hope we all can do something to make a dent in the flood of sadness and misery that rise even as the water begins to recede.

All of the groups were great... it brought a lump to the throat just to see the Heartbeats with four original members on stage, and James Dozier, one of the two original leads of the Avalons (the lead on the bridge of Heart's Desire) had every note, and then some... with a nice backup by the Four Dots. And Philly's own Royal Blues showed that they belong on ANY stage presenting vocal group harmony.

Wow, it's a MONTH since my last posting. I really need to apologize for that.... I may have been a bit busy, but not THAT busy. Oh well enough of that... below are the listings for the last month.

Last week it was an honor and a thrill to have Wes Hayes, who sang with The Dreams, Kenny Esquire & The Starlites, The Coeds, and his own bands, in the studio, along with Billy Taylor.
Billy of course sang with The Castelles and Sonny Til's third group of Orioles. We also learned that he too sang with The Dreams (on Darlene), The Modern Redcaps, and also with (though not recording with) The Spaniels and The Dominoes.

And what a thrill it was to have phone calls from Bernie Harris, another original member of The Dreams, and the man himelf, George Grant of the legendary Castelles.

Last week's show was changed at the last minute to reflect my trip Friday night to Fordham University to see the Bronx African American History Project honor Arthur Crier... in part for his contribution to the culture, but also for his contribution to improving the lives of the people of the area. Sorry for the late post again. As you may have guessed from listening to last week's show, I was really coming down with something. I was "out of it" for a few days, but now I'm back.

Beginning this Saturday, the nineteenth, and for a few weeks, Johnny Barbata will be out and I will be filling in for him for at least this Saturday and the next... he'll also be out on the fifth of March, but that scheduling is still up in the air.

On the February 5 show, we will suspend our normal features and defer a few listener requests as we do an all-New Orleans show in celebration of Mardi Gras. There will still be a gospel record of the week... from New Orleans, of course.

Speaking of Mardi Gras, my friend David April will be AT Mardi Gras... I'll be filling in for him during his normal time this Tuesday, "Fat Tuesday", February 8. That's two hours of Roots of Rhythm and Blues, beginning at 7 p.m., and the Gospel Train from 9 to 10 p.m. I anticipate David calling and going on the air live reporting from the festivities.

We have also confirmed that on Saturday February 19 we will have as in-studio guests Billy Taylor of the Castelles and later Orioles, and John Hayes from the Dreams. It'll be fun discussing how it was in the mid-fifties singing in Philly.

I'm way late with this, but I just wanted to make a separate entry on the Listener Appreciation day held at the studio on November 13. It was wonderful meeting so many nice people, and I was personally elated by the presence of the two Guytones -- James Brown Robinson and Stanley Evans-- and their bringing the rest of the Heaven Bound Gospel Singers with them. I was further thrilled at Garnet Mimms and his lovely wife Delores coming by.

Heaven Bound performed a couple of songs acappella that just seemed to lift the place of the ground. People are still talking about it.

Again thanks to everyone for coming out, for being so generous in the fund drive.... and for just being there.

WRDV is having its open house this Saturday, November 13. We hope as many listeners as possible will come. Most of us on air people will be there. There's also a possibility that some people who have guested with us over the last year or so will be there... I don't quite have last Saturday's playlist ready to post (it was a "double show") but I thought I'd just get a few thoughts down.

The station is in its annual fund drive. We're an non-profit, all-volunteer station, and we only "beg" once a year. There are premiums you can receive for contributions, if you'd like. They can be viewed at www.wrdv.org. The address for donations is... RDV-FM, P.O. Box 2012, Warminster, PA 18974.

Next Saturday, October 30, we will be featuring Bill Robinson And The Quails. Also, for the first time in the six years I have been on the air, we'll be doing a small Halloween feature.

We've got some special shows lined up for November:

November 6 is the one-month-delayed sixth anniversary of the show... so it will be an all-Philadelphia show.

On November 13, we'll do a "Time Capsule" type show like we did last May... featuring some of the best of the best in group recordings.... the classic groups like the Five Keys, Solitaires, Flamingos, etc.

November 20 I am gonna try something that arises no doubt from recently having "too much" exposure to big-time vinyl collectors :) We'll be doing a show consisting entirely of 45's from my collection. I almost never play 45's... this should be interesting (and yes, some of the better stuff on this show will undoubtedly be boots.)

November 27 we'll feature "Museum" pieces (not the entire show, but probably about half the sides we play). These are sounds that I have only obtained over the years via tapes or other recordings of shows by collectors. Each museum piece will have full acknowledgment of the source that brought the item to my attention.

The Oct 23 playlist should be up in the next day or two.

This coming weekend, October 23, I'll be on for four hours (8 AM to Noon) as I fill in on Johnny Barbata's R And B Shop. I'll mostly keep up his tradition of playing almost all up tempo tunes, though I'll probably sneak in a few more slow things. For the entire four hours, we'll be featuring the music of Clyde McPhatter; during the earlier portion concentrating more on his work with The Dominoes and Drifters, and during the Sound of The City emphasizing his solo stuff with Atlantic, MGM, and Mercury. Hi everyone. This is the first entry for the "blog" pertaining to the Sound Of The City Show heard Saturday mornings from 10 AM to Noon (eastern) on WRDV-FM, 89.3 Warminster/Hatboro (PA), 97.1 Bensalem (PA), 107.3 Philadelphia (PA) and WLBS-FM, 97.1 Bristol/Levittown (PA).

The show is a rhythm and blues show which emphasizes classic 1950's style vocal groupharmony. I also incorporate pioneer r and b from the 40's and earlier, gospel and blues influences, and the growth of the music into soul and other later formats.

It's my intention to post playlists, talk about the radio station and the show, possibly even post pictures or the like, and who knows what else. I'd like to make this interactive, too, so your comments about the show and the music are welcome.

This is my first attempt at a "blog" (short for weblog) or any website related work. So your comments, pro and con, about the blog are also invited (but please try to be a bit gentle :)
